Discription:
On the night of July 18, 1863, an attack on the fort was launched by the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. The 54th was an all African American regiment. The regiment went over the forts rampart, but after some hand-to-hand combat, the force was driven out. The regiment suffered heavy casualties, and they lost their commander.
