 Description:

On April 10, 1861, the Confederates demanded that Fort Sumter, an Union fort in South Carolina, surrender. The commander of Fort Sumter refused. Two days later, April 12, the Confederates start firing on the defenseless fort. On April 13 Fort Sumter surrendered. This attack was the start of the Civil War.
