The United States needed an ally to help them against the British, so they turned to the French. The French could provide weapons and supplies. The French also had a powerful navy that the colonists needed. The colonies sent Benjamin Franklin to Paris to persuade the French to declare war on England. It wasn't until Saratoga that the French allied with the United States and declared war on England (see the "Battles" page then "Battle of Saratoga".
